A good story line.. I am having difficulties with the language the main character uses. She uses the word "thee" alot, however understand this is conducive to the character and time. Just an all around sweet story. A bit heavy on the religion, but then again, it goes with the author, characters and the story, so I just need to suck it up! Nov 26, Terri rated it really liked it Shelves: love-inspired-historical. Wonderful story! I enjoyed it. Miniseries: The Gabriel Sisters.

The author did such a great job with character and plot development! Each character was so unique and well-formed that I could just picture them in my mind! The description of the town - typical people who's eyes had to be opened by actions rather than words - was great.
The author turned me from hating to liking some of the characters and from hating to despising others. Both Lon and Mercy had good personalities and I could see them being drawn to each other. There was plenty of religious references in this book, but I don't think it was "bang you over the head" religion.
It was "I want some of that. This message was clearly shown later int he book.
The illnesses were covered in a way that I could tell the author really did research and had knowledge of the subject. There were two main disasters - the cholera outbreak and the mine disaster - that really strengthened Mercy's characters. There was also a second romance, and I guess they both ended realistically This world is such a tragic place, but there's also such hope. Jul 04, Destiny rated it liked it Shelves: historical-romance , christian-historical-romance , read-christian-romance. I thought this was a delightful little novel. It's been such a long time since I've read Christian fiction, I decided I would read this one.
While I was a little annoyed by Mercy's thees and thys, I'm told that's how the Quakers spoke. I also like that for the setting on this novel, the people were very progressive. I've had some quarrels with family members on men and women being equal. My family are Christians, so I was kind of expecting their attitudes when going into reading this novel. But I thought this was a delightful little novel. But I was plesantly surprised. Very good work Lyn Cote, I will definitely be getting the other books in this series and trying out more of your work!
Dec 09, Christy rated it liked it Shelves: historical. A nice little read concerning women doctors of the 's and trials that they may have faced. I just never could grasp how big they made his issues in this book. I just kept wanting to say.

Move On Lon so I can read about somebody else. Dec 17, Laura rated it did not like it. Nothing much happened. Jun 03, Maria Lopez Larucci rated it it was amazing. This author, Lyn Cote, deserves to have every single one of her books rated a perfect 5 out of 5 stars because her books truly are perfect. As a teenager and a Christian myself, I have struggled to find good, wholesome novels that are not inappropriate, and instead have passionate, true love that develops. It's even harder to find a story that includes mentions of Christianity unabashedly.

By pure chance, my mom and I were in the library in our town only a week ago, and as she was searching for a certain book in particular, I was mindlessly browsing a nearby shelf.
I saw these tiny little books on the shelf and was intrigued- a minute detail became the reason for my attention- and I am eternally grateful for this occurrence because in Lyn Cote's books, I have found romance, history, and overall, a story that is beautifully written with wonderful characters.
